CHAPTER THIRTEEN
On Thursday morning the freezing rain made for a very tense drive into work. When Karen arrived, she was grateful that Julie had picked up their usual beverages at Tim Horton’s. Julie and Karen looked out for one another and covered each other’s backs when necessary. On any given day Karen was a hard worker, but today she was going above and beyond her usual workload to help Julie out whenever she could. It was her way of showing Julie how thankful she was for their talk the previous evening.
By lunch time the sun was shining. The roads were in decent driving conditions. Karen went out and picked up a beautiful bouquet of flowers along with a bottle of wine and delivered them to Julie’s home. She knew where Julie and Rhonda kept the spare key hidden, so she let herself into the kitchen. She put the flowers in a vase with a card that read: “Julie, you’re the best! Love Karen.”
Jessie was also pleased to see the roads were somewhat cleared by noon. She had an errand to run. She had ordered something for Karen that was ready to be picked up, and she wanted it for the following night. With the errand done, she scooted by the hospital to see if Karen was available for a quick drink on her lunch break. She had never done this before, but sometimes spontaneity was fun.
Julie was on duty and told Jessie that Karen had gone out.
“Why are you smiling?” Jessie asked.
“No real reason. I’m just remembering that when Rhonda and I first dated, we used to stop in on each other just to say hi.”
“Ha-ha. The difference is, Karen and I are not dating,” Jessie reminded her.
“Not yet.” Julie looked at Jessie and gave her a wink. “I have to get going, but I will let Karen know you stopped by.”
“Thanks, I appreciate that. See you tonight at the game.”
Karen had gotten back to work just in time to wash her hands and switch with Julie, so she could go for her lunch. Julie had finished filling Karen in on all the patients and updating the charts. She put her sweater on and turned to Karen. “By the way, you had a visitor when you were out.”
“Was it Joan? She probably wanted to see if I am still angry with her,” Karen replied.
“No, it wasn’t Joan. It was Jessie. She came by to see if you had time for a quick drink with her.” Julie was more than happy to give Karen the message.
“Jessie?”
“That’s what I said: Miss Jessie Carmichael.”
“She has never stopped by before to see us. How sweet is that?” Karen smiled from ear to ear. Simply hearing Jessie’s name got her excited.
“Actually she came by to see you. Notice that she didn’t stick around to spend my break with me,” Julie rubbed in teasingly. “Anyway, I have to go. See you in a bit.”
Karen loved Jessie’s thoughtfulness. She felt the heaviness weighing on her heart lighten. It was replaced by sheer joy.
